Mantel Story

Lifestyle blogger, conscious mama and Venice Supper Club doyenne Leah Forester recently took to blue as her signature color in refreshing her Venice, CA living room. The stylist, reality TV star and frequent brand influencer already looks out onto a horizon of endless Pacific, but fancied a new collection of Luna décor essentials in varying shades of marine to redecorate, reimagine – and re-inspire her oceanside sanctuary. Here’s how she did it.

Commit to Color

“One of my favorite things to do is invest in a single saturated color – whether I’m putting on a couture dress or redecorating a room. In this case, I was taken with this deep turquoise-meets-teal wondershade. It’s fresh, romantic, cool but not cold. It reminds me of a peacock feather or a shade in some deep layer of the ocean. Colors have an energetic effect, and tranquil is important for my busy schedule and family.”

Keep it Unscripted

“As much as I love a great hotel, with a prescribed look and feel, a home should feel a little bit un-done. I don’t like to match things perfectly, or create total symmetry. The mantel collection was achieved by not over-thinking sizes or shapes, and instead going on instinct – what vase wants to be next to which candle or mercury glass? How can this eclectic mix of shapes and sizes compliment each other in their juxtaposition? Once you try to make it perfect you’ve lost. So have fun. Be spontaneous with design. You live with it, breathe with it, play around it, dance near it – or at least we do! It can’t be a precious process. Loosen up and get behind what feels good to you.”

Go for Gold

“Gold has always been a part of my jewelry box, my kitchen, my car, my everything. The way it compliments all colors, from black to eggplant to hot pink to – in this case – teal blue – makes it the most neutral color in the disco rainbow. I have gold near my bathtub, in my subterranean TV room – it’s truly a color that ads glamour, no matter the room.”

Flora and Fauna

“I go to the farmers market every weekend with my kids, and one thing I love to let them do is choose our flowers for the week. Sometimes their choices make a lot of sense - and sometimes they don’t! But that’s the fun part – making different varieties work, and letting the little ones have some decision-making as you shop. We have an energetic little Chihuahua called Lola, and if I put any floral arrangement too close to the ground, on a low coffee table for instance, it could easily end up on the floor. So the mantel is an ideal spot for a single flower or small bouquet to shine. My daughter loves feeling that she contributed something to the beauty of our home.”
